Abstract

This article aims to reflect on the relationship between time and affection in Annie Ernaux’s work, focusing on Shame, published in 1997. For this purpose, in the first part I intend to argue, based on an analysis of the author's interviews and some strategies in her literary texts, that time is the primary theme of her work. Next, I argue that understanding the complexity of time in Ernaux's writing must involve affections, because they organize and create ways of inhabiting the present, the past and the future. In the second part of the article I focus on Shame in order to discuss how the affect that names the book functions as an axial event that divides time, creating another thickness for it.
