Abstract

The possibility of observing the rich and contradictory discussions about theinstitutionalization and disciplinarization of historic studies are erased when wesee them from the scientific point of view typical of the 19th century. In suchdebates, faith, laws and reason considered History only as a knowledge field. Thestart of the Republic period in Brazil is a profitable period for such studies for theshock between spaces of experience and horizons of expectations of differentcharacters, such as the Catholic Church, Republican governments, monarchistbureaucrats and intellectuals. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the proposalsin the writing of the Brazilian History by the members of the Instituto Histórico eGeográfico Brasileiro (IHGB), in the city of Rio de Janeiro, when a new politicalregime is established on 15th November 1889.
