This article aims to analyze the work written by the Syrian historian Constantine K. Zurayk, titled Ma’na al-Nakba, The Meaning of the Disaster about the Nakba, the expulsion of the Palestinian population, in the midst of the creation of the State of Israel in 1948. The work, published in the same year, presents reflections about the Palestine problem related to the Arab cause, as well as an effect of Zionism. Based on this publication, we seek to reflect on the transformations of the temporality and the writing of Palestinian history in relation to this central dimension: the Nakba and its consequences for the Palestinian population and the territory. In addition to Zurayk, other productions contemporary to the author are visualized, as well as more recent academic production, especially from 1970 onwards. The formation of a historiography on the Nakba is presented, as well as the continuities and changes in the perspectives about the Nakba and its relevance in the present for thinking about the “Question of Palestine”.
